There are so many forms of surfing and definitely one to suit you! Nowadays you can bodyboard, longboard, shortboard, retro, kneeboard, tow surf and then you have surf kayaking, wave sking, skim boarding, and kite surfing.
We now have so many principles all dedicated to fun and exhilaration! No matter what
you ride, how you ride it, whether boy or girl, young or old all surfers have one bonding connection – a love, respect and commitment that draws us to the ocean! Even in the middle of winter when the rock pools are frozen! The beauty of surfing is the sheer adrenalin and comradeship found in this most definite sub culture. Surfers around the
world have a uniform language; they have their own tongue and connectivity regarding
the ocean, the swells and always live for the next day when 'it’s going off!'
This may all sound a bit ‘Point Break’ but it’s true. It’s a bit like Pringles! Once you
pop, catch your first wall, you really can’t stop! You’ll be checking the wave forecasts, checking the swell, wind, tides and at every minute you’ll have to know what the
waves are like! It is so addictive, and why, well just get out there and see!
Surfing keeps you incredibly fit, gives you a huge buzz and washes away any
problems, worries or stress. When you have your own kit then there’s no green or
court fees only a bit of fuel to get you to the beach. It’s back to mother nature, riding
ocean waves which have travelled thousands of miles to eventual lap or crash upon
our shores. It’s no wonder the Hawaiians call it the sport of Kings and not just
because of their history but it enriches your life!
However it’s important that people learning to surf, no matter what principle, learn to
crawl before they walk! Without doubt the surf and seas can be a dangerous place. Unfortunately people get into trouble each year along our shores, thankfully whilst
surfing you have equipment with you which can keep you afloat and a suit to keep
you warm but it’s essential that you learn how to use it and never put yourself in a
position which is beyond your ability.
Paddling!
If your interest is in paddling then you should contact CANI, the Canoe Association
of N.Ireland. This is a great bunch of girls and guys who will point you in the right
